"Disaster management curriculum in schools, self-help groups as a focal point, research on traditional practices and WASH sensitisation are areas that need to be developed further." - Prabhath Kalkura, Karnataka Red Cross in Mangalore, Karnataka
1. Disaster management in curriculum: Ten years
from 2004, a only few states have incorporated disaster management in their
regular curriculum. High priority to be given in this perspective. Only in
vulnerable states primary and secondary level syllabus finds disaster
management in regular curriculum. These children may migrate to any places in
future. So, strict directions and supervision of the same is required.
Culture of safety to be developed among children.
2. Self-Help group
as focal point: Community is the first
responder to any disaster. Health is given priority in emergency relief
operation. First aid training at the peripheral level utilizing Self-Help group
as a platform will be handy. Hand holding assistance in rural India is
essential.
3. Research on
traditional practice in disaster management: it will be ideal to have more research on traditional practice in
disaster management and later positive could be incorporated which will be more
acceptable to community.
4. WASH training: Even after ten
years hardly any changes found in post disaster epidemics, sensitization on
WASH and better practice in this area will yield better results in prevention
and control of epidemics in disaster and other days.
