[se-drm] FOR DISCUSSION: Observing 10th Anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami-Lessons and Voices; Examples; Advice.Reply by 9.00 a.m. 27 December 2014.

Moderator’s Note: Dear Members, 26 December 2014, marks the 10th anniversary of Indian Ocean Tsunami which took the lives of over 200,000 people and affected over a dozen countries. The Disaster Management Community of Practice observes the day with a 24-hour query and live discussion being conducted in partnership with Saferworld Communications. Request members to share their views and join hands in this endeavour. Thanks.

At this hour, 10 years ago, giant waves were sweeping across the Indian Ocean, creating havoc in a dozen countries. We salute the spirit of the affected families and communities who have been rebuilding their lives since then. As we reach the 10th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami, preparations are also ongoing for formulating a new global disaster framework.

Today, we launch a 24-hour query along with live discussion to gather the lessons learnt and your voices. Follow the live updates at http://unsolexdmcop.blogspot.in. You can post your responses on se-drm@solutionexchange-un.net.in or on skype to unsolexdm. The insights and views from the members will feed into an ongoing Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN) campaign ‘Road to Sendai’ (www.roadtosendai.net). The network is capturing the local voices, successes and needs and would like to take these to the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, to be held in Sendai, Japan, in March 2015. What have we have experienced in the last 10 years and the learnings should feed into the formulation of the next framework.

We call upon the members to share:
  • Reflections on the improvements; especially in the fields of early warning, governance structures or policies, awareness and education, vulnerability reduction and disaster preparedness.
  • The new challenges that have emerged for disaster risk reduction over the last 10 years.
  • Your message to world leaders as they create a new disaster framework. What we must do in order to avoid another such disaster?

Warm regards,

Saferworld Communications,
New Delhi.
